Dr Justin Valentin

Dean, Faculty of Business and Sustainable Development

Dr Justin Valentin in 2013 achieved the award of a PhD from King’s College, University of London.  He is known widely in Seychelles for his expertise in the teaching of mathematics, which was the subject of his doctoral research.  His earlier academic qualifications were all in the field of education – a Diploma in Education from Seychelles Polytechnic, followed by a Bachelor of Education (Honours) from Edith Cowan University, Australia.  He later went to Malaysia to study for a Master’s degree in Education from the University of Science.

Justin was appointed to UniSey in 2013 as Dean of what is now the Faculty of Business & Law.  He is responsible for a range of University of London programmes as well as a new UniSey degree in Social Science.  Prior to joining the university, he taught as a secondary school teacher of mathematics, and as a part-time lecturer for the National Institute of Education and Seychelles Institute of Management.

He is a strong advocate of research as a focus of university life, and topics of particular interest to him include social science research methodologies, testing and measuring learning, and the analysis of quantitative and qualitative data.  He has published a number of conference papers on different aspects of mathematics teaching and learning.

Dr Valentin is active in a variety of professional and other networks and is a school governor.  He is involved in different arts activities, including poetry writing, drama, story-telling and public speaking.  As a sole author, he has published a novel and an anthology of poems (both in Creole).  A new interest for him is to conduct forum theatre, where drama is used to role-play occurrences in the workplace and ultimately bring about worthwhile change.
