This book is a product of the UNESCO ‘Routes of Slavery’ project, which was initiated in 2002 to foster a better understanding of the Slave Trade, its causes, forms, and enduring consequences worldwide. The book comprises a series of interviews with elderly informants. These interviews are the informants’ recollections of earlier times related to slavery, passed down to them by their parents or grandparents. Some of the interviews may be construed as the informants’ interpretations of slavery, shaped by their own experiences with its lingering effects. In other words, they reflect on the lasting impacts of slavery. However, some interviews contain firsthand accounts of events experienced by the informants, including direct acquaintances with people they knew to be slaves. As such, this book can be considered an oral historical record of slavery, offering the viewpoint of slave descendants.
