RATIONALE

The course is designed for English speaking people working in hospitality areas, such as hotels, restaurants, entertainment and transport facilities, who want to develop their ability to communicate in Russian. It consists of three modules which focus respectively on basics of Russian language (grammar, phonetics, reading), speaking skills, and vocabulary for hospitality.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

As a result of their participation in this course, it is anticipated that  the learners  will be able to:

  • Demonstrate knowledge of basic grammar concepts, reading rules and phonetic principles of Russian.
  • Engage in conversation in Russian, making utterances and responses within certain communication areas (greetings, sharing personal details, exchanging cultural information, etc.), including specific situations of professional interaction (check-in at the hotel, taking the order in the restaurant, serving the client at the customs, etc.).
  • Build up the vocabulary in the area of hospitality.

COURSE PLAN

Learning Outcomes

Module 1. Grammar focus
  • Formulate (at the basic level) and apply the rules of Russian grammar in the following areas:
    • Sentence structure, sentence types and sentence parts,
    • Verb conjugation for the present/past/future
    • Number of nouns
    • Noun – adjective agreement
    • Personal pronouns
    • Numerals
    • Prepositions
    • Modals
  • Demonstrate knowledge of and apply the rules of reading in Russian (elementary).
  • Demonstrate knowledge and skills of phonetic principles of Russian.
Module 2. Speaking
  • Produce different communicative types of utterances (statements, questions and requests) and expertly use them in relevant situations of speaking.
  • Master conversational formulas and clichés of everyday communication within the area of hospitality.
Module 3. Vocabulary
  • Demonstrate knowledge of basic vocabulary in the area of hospitality:
    • Personal details
    • Cultural information
    • Professional interaction (check-in at the hotel, taking the order in the restaurant, serving the client at the customs
  • Expertly use the acquired vocabulary in relevant situations of speaking.
