Biography

Dr. Jeremy Kiszka is a marine ecologist and conservation biologist at Florida International University. He obtained his MSc in oceanography from the Université du Littoral Côte d’Opale in 2004, and his PhD in biological oceanography from the Université de La Rochelle (France) in 2010. After completing two postdoctoral positions with Institute of Research for Development (2010-2012, Montpellier) and Florida International University (2012-2019), he became an Assistant Professor within the Department of Biological Sciences at FIU in 2019. His research focuses on the ecology, behavior and conservation of marine mammals and other marine megafauna. He is particularly interested in the impact of large marine vertebrates on community and ecosystem dynamics, and on the influence of ecological forces on the behavior on these species. Most of his work is field based, primarily in tropical and subtropical marine ecosystems. Jeremy has been a leading scientist investigating cetaceans in the western Indian Ocean (Mayotte, Comoros, Madagascar, La Réunion, and along the African coast from South Africa to Kenya). In 2020, he initiated the first research program on cetaceans in Seychelles in collaboration with UniSey. Dr. Kiszka has authored or co-authored over 100 peer-reviewed scientific publications, a book, and 7 book chapters.
