Dr. Srimal Fernando received his PhD in International Affairs. He was the recipient of the prestigious O.P. Jindal Doctoral Fellowship and South Asian University (SAU) Scholarship under the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) umbrella. He also has a Master of Philosophy (MPhil) in Sociology and a Master of Arts (MA) in Development Studies and Public Policy. Dr. Fernando’s research has been published in major peer-reviewed scholarly journals. He focuses on comparative politics and socioeconomic policies of Small Island Developing States (SIDS) as a Senior Lecturer.
Dr. Fernando has recently published over 100 research papers and provided a combination of lectures, seminars, and online activities in addition to supervision. Dr. Fernando is an expert in international relations and serves as an advisor on new regional diplomacy. Dr. Fernando has published over 100 weekly Foreign Policy Columns focused on the five Indian Ocean Island states of Mauritius, Seychelles, the Maldives, Sri Lanka, and Réunion (2020-2023). Dr. Fernando has also been on International Television channels, presenting insightful commentary for more than 50 live broadcasts, as well as in-depth analysis of significant events and developments. He has also won awards such as the 2018/2019 ‘Best Journalist of the Year’ (GCA) Media Award for 2016 and the Indian Council of World Affairs (ICWA). Dr. Fernando is the author of ‘Politics, Economics and Connectivity: In Search of the South Asian Union’.
