“Constitutional Essence – Can an Amendment Be Unconstitutional?” by Mr. Sean Rainford
On Wednesday, 10th September 2025, the Department of Law had the pleasure of hosting Mr. Sean Rainford, a PhD candidate at the School of Law and Government, Dublin City University.
Mr. Rainford delivered a thought-provoking lecture titled “Constitutional Essence – Can an Amendment Be Unconstitutional?” where he explored his area of research through a comparative lens.
His presentation examined the central arguments for and against the amenability of constitutions to amendment, while contextualising the debate with case studies of countries that have adopted differing approaches to constitutional change.
Emphasising the constitution as the heart of democracy – anchoring principles such as the separation of powers and the rule of law – Mr. Rainford highlighted the importance of understanding both local constitutional dynamics and the broader global constitutional landscape.
The University thanks Mr. Rainford for sharing his expertise and providing law students with valuable insights into this critical area of constitutional law.
