The Faculty of Research and Innovation (FRI) at the University of Seychelles advances new knowledge, drives technological and social progress, and mentors students. Its key responsibilities include conducting original research, securing grants, and translating discoveries into practical applications. In collaboration with national and international stakeholders, the FRI undertakes scientific research that is published in the Seychelles Research Journal (SRJ) and other international peer-reviewed journals, providing evidence to support policy formulation in the country.

The core responsibilities of the FRI are as follows:

  • Conducting Research: Designing studies and experiments, analysing data, and publishing findings in academic journals.
  • Driving Innovation: Developing new products, processes, and solutions, and facilitating technology transfer and commercialisation.
  • Securing Funding: Preparing grant proposals to obtain financial support from government agencies, foundations, and industry partners.
  • Mentoring and Teaching: Guiding undergraduate and postgraduate students through laboratory work, research projects, and academic development.

Research Institutes and Education Centres

James Michel Blue Economy Research Institute (BERI)

Focuses on marine and ocean-based sustainable economic sectors.

James R. Mancham Peace and Diplomacy Research Institute (PDRI)

Promotes dialogue, peace studies, and international diplomacy.

Creole Language and Culture Research Institute (CLCRI)

Preserves and studies local heritage, language, and Creole identity.

Island Biodiversity & Conservation Centre (IBC)

Conducts research on unique island ecosystems and conservation strategies.

Doctoral School

The school is an academic structure within the faculty that organizes PhD training, manages student registration, and monitors research progress. Its core functions include providing structured training, supporting thesis supervisors, and preparing candidates for research careers.

Education and Socio - Economic Research Institute (ESERI)

Investigates social, economic, and educational development.

University Centre for Environmental Education (UCEE)

Provides a broad range of services and programmes to schools to enhance environmental awareness, support the development of sustainable schools, and prepare students for future environmental challenges faced by society.
