The Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Environmental Science is a four-year undergraduate degree designed to meet the needs of Small Island Developing States (SIDS), with a particular focus on the marine and terrestrial ecosystems of Seychelles.

Launched in 2025, this enhanced version of UniSey’s long-running Environmental Science degree (first introduced in 2012 and accredited by the Seychelles Quality Assurance (SQA) body in 2013/2014) provides a broad and multidisciplinary understanding of environmental issues in tropical and island contexts.

The programme integrates lectures, fieldwork, laboratory exercises, and research projects, offering students both theoretical and practical experience. Small cohort sizes enable personalised attention from experienced lecturers, while interactions with visiting scientists, industry partners, and researchers provide exposure to real-world environmental challenges.

Students have the opportunity to engage in internships and applied research projects with local and regional partners, strengthening their technical and professional skills.

Aims of Programme / Objectives

The BSc (Hons) Environmental Science programme aims to develop environmentally literate, research-driven scientists who can apply scientific knowledge, technical skills, and critical thinking to address environmental challenges within Seychelles and the wider SIDS region.

By the end of the programme, graduates will be able to:

    • Demonstrate a broad and integrated understanding of environmental science, including physical, biological, and socio-economic dimensions.

    • Analyse, synthesise, and evaluate scientific information to address complex environmental issues and propose evidence-based solutions.

    • Apply the principles of research design, data collection, analysis, and interpretation in both field and laboratory settings.

    • Utilise appropriate technological, analytical, and geospatial tools to support environmental monitoring and decision-making.

    • Exhibit effective communication, teamwork, and leadership skills, and engage constructively with diverse stakeholders.

    • Demonstrate academic and professional integrity through sound scientific reasoning, ethical research practice, and responsible environmental behaviour.

    • Develop the capacity for innovation, creativity, and lifelong learning, enabling adaptation to changing scientific and environmental contexts.

  • Full-time: 4 years (Honours degree)

Option to exit after 3 years with an Ordinary BSc degree.

  • Part-time: 5 – 6 years

The programme is offered in English.

The programme is offered on a full-time or part-time basis, and incorporates various modes of delivery, from face-to-face lectures, blended learning, practical work, group work, and self-study.

The programme is delivered over four academic years (or equivalent part-time study), totalling 480 credits. The first three years consist of confirmed core modules focusing on foundational and applied environmental sciences. The fourth year represents the Honours stage, comprising advanced coursework and an extended research dissertation.
