Dr. Luc Gigord is a conservation biologist and ecologist with over 25 years of experience in biodiversity, ecology, population genetics, conservation biology, and territorial development. He earned his Doctorate in Sciences in 1997 from Université Paris XI and received an accreditation to supervise research (HDR) in 2009 from Université Paris VI.

His academic career spans research and teaching positions at universities in La Réunion, Paris, University of Exeter, and Lausanne (Switzerland), alongside leadership roles in biodiversity conservation institutions. From 2010 to 2018, he served as Scientific Director and then General Director of the Conservatoire Botanique National de Mascarin, overseeing scientific research, conservation programs, and outreach efforts in Mayotte and the Îles Éparses.

In 2025, Dr. Gigord founded the Institut pour la Biodiversité Indianocéanique Systémique (IBIS), a regional non-governmental network linking Western Indian Ocean islands. IBIS promotes collaborative research, capacity building, and economic valorisation of biodiversity to support sustainable development. His long-standing commitment to regional cooperation includes coordinating transboundary projects funded by INTERREG, BEST, and other European or national programs. As IBIS Chairman, Dr. Gigord pioneers innovative biodiversity governance, inclusive project design, and fundraising strategies.

He has authored or co-authored over 70 peer-reviewed articles and numerous technical reports published internationally, and is fluent in English and French, with familiarity in Creole cultures.
