The programme offers students the opportunity to study both economics and finance. In so doing, it equips them with the knowledge and understanding of methods and concepts in both economics and finance and enables them apply both financial and economic reasoning. The programme ideally prepares students for graduate study in the subjects and for a future career in finance and economics.

The programme aims to:

  • equip you with a knowledge and understanding of the core areas of finance and economics;
  • enable you to apply economic and statistical analysis to a range of policy problems;
  • enable you to apply financial and statistical analysis to a range of problems in finance;
  • equip you with knowledge and understanding of the workings of the economy and financial markets;
  • equip you with appropriate conceptual and analytic tools, and to provide opportunities for the development and application of these tools;
  • develop critical and evaluative thinking in the context of economics and finance;
  • enable you to develop, through the study of economics and finance, a range of skills and abilities that will contribute to your effectiveness in employment;
  • support you in becoming an independent learner, and in planning your studies and subsequent career.

Full-time: 3 years
Part-time: 8 years

The programme is offered in English.

In order to pass a course, you must: 

  • Submit all coursework assignments and obtain an overall coursework assessment mark of at least 40% (the pass grade) 
  • Obtain an exam grade of at least 40% (the pass grade).  
  • If you fail a coursework, you may only re-attempt one other equivalent coursework in the same academic year. However, your maximum score in the circumstances will be a Pass, i.e., 40%. 
  • If you fail an exam, you may only re-attempt one other equivalent exam within the same academic year at a maximum allowable score of ‘Pass’. 
  • If you fail a re-submitted coursework and/or a re-sat exam, you may retake the whole course in the following academic year.  

The grading system for the programme is as follows; 

To pass the programme and be eligible to graduate with the relevant degree, you should pass the twenty-four courses of your chosen pathway at a minimum pass mark of 40%. 

Your final grade will be the average of the aggregate marks for all courses. 

 First Class: 70% and above 

  • Upper Second Class: 60% and above 
  • Lower Second Class: 50% and above 
  • Third Class: 40% and above 
  • Fail: below 40% 

To achieve the learning outcomes of the courses in the programme, students will be expected to undertake a onemonth internship programme at the end of semester 2, 4 and 6 and submit an internship report.

  • For each course, there are both lecturer-led and student-centred sessions.
  • Each course is delivered over 12 weeks, in weekly contact sessions of 3 hours.
  • Each timetabled contact session comprises 2 hours of lecture and 1 hour of tutorial.
  • All courses include a maximum of twelve topics and contact revision sessions.
  • There are four courses on offer in every week of the academic year.
  • If you are studying part-time, you may opt to undertake between 2 and 4 courses per year.
  • The modes of delivery may vary from topic to topic. Some topics may need more practical problem solving than others. Depending on the nature of the topic, more emphasis may be placed on practical activities relating to the concept being learnt and its application to real world business administration. As a result, the lecturer-led sessions of the programme are loaded with group work, discussions, case studies and potential role plays. Comparative analysis of theory and current practices is also a common mode of delivery used.
  • Delivery methods may vary throughout every course in order to satisfy the requirements of each topic and learning needs of students as much as possible.
  • You are also expected to carry out directed and independent learning activities including further reading, assignments, problem solving and research for discussions during the contact sessions.
  • Tutorials are available on demand. They may be scheduled for individual students or groups of students with common needs.
  • Typical lecture resources are: a classroom, computer, a projector, flip charts, writing board and markers. 

To be eligible for BSc in Business Administration you must normally* be aged 17 or above in the year of registration and 

  • Have passed two A levels and three  ‘O’ level/IGCSE qualifications (or equivalent) (any two of these must be English and Mathematics at minimum grade C), 
  • Have passed UK GCSE/GCE 0-level English language at Grade C or above, or, within the last three years, have passed a recognised test of proficiency in English at the required standard,
  • Have a Diploma in a relevant field such as Business Studies, Management, Accounting, Finance etc

Technical Pathway

  • Have any National Qualification Framework (NQF) level 4 accredited Certificate with 2 years continuous working experience in a relevant field, and 
  • Have 5 years’ continuous working experience in a relevant management position.

 

*Applications will be considered from applicants who do not meet the normal minimum age requirement for admission. Each application will be considered on an individual basis, and the decision taken will be at the discretion of the University.
