Wilfrid Fousse graduated with a Master’s of Science degree in “agronomy” from the Institut National Agronomique de Paris-Grignon, France, and did a specialisation in “Tropical countries” in Montpellier, France. He has a wide experience as rural development and environment project manager, and has a special interest for management of protected areas. He has worked many years in the Indian Ocean, first as Technical Adviser in the Seychelles Ministry of Environment of Seychelles between 1997 to 2001. Married to a Seychellois, he then took the position of Directeur de l’Agriculture et de la Forêt in the island of Mayotte from 2004 to 2008, and later worked in the Red Sea (Saudi Arabia) and Singapore. He has a long experience in administrative management and economy, including accounting. Wilfrid led the creation of 5 marine protected areas in the small Caribbean islands, Saint Lucia (Soufrière, St Vincent and Grenadines (Tobago cays), Dominica and Grenade, and of one marine national park in Mayotte. In those different locations, his philosophy has always been to associate the conservation of beaches, reefs and fish populations with economic development through regulated tourism and sustainable fishing activities. In Seychelles, he worked mostly on the reduction of the economic development impact on the environment, especially on the marine environment. He has contributed to a number of studies on impact assessment related to waste management and hotel developments. He feels that environment conservation must involve and benefit to the local population, directly or indirectly, in order to be successful.
