Islands to Oceans: Science for a Sustainable Seychelles

The 2nd Seychelles Environmental Science Symposium builds on the success of the inaugural Seychelles Coastal and Marine Science Symposium held in 2024. Expanding beyond coastal and marine science, the 2027 symposium brings together research from terrestrial, coastal, and marine environments, creating a national platform for environmental science in Seychelles. The Seychelles Environmental Science Symposium will provide an opportunity for researchers, practitioners, government agencies, NGOs, private organizations, students, and community representatives to exchange knowledge, foster collaboration, and showcase the latest environmental research being conducted in Seychelles.
WHY IS THE SYMPOSIUM EXPANDING?
Seychelles’ environment is deeply interconnected. From mountain forests and wetlands to mangroves, seagrass beds, coral reefs, and the deep ocean, environmental science, challenges, and solutions span the entire landscape.
Recognising these vital ridge-to-reef connections, the Seychelles Environmental Science Symposium will expand beyond marine science to include terrestrial ecosystems and the relationships between islands, sea and society.
The expanded scope will:
- Bring together researchers working across terrestrial, coastal and marine disciplines.
- Encourage interdisciplinary collaboration and knowledge exchange.
- Strengthen the use of scientific evidence in environmental policy and management.
- Provide, for the first time, a dedicated national platform for terrestrial environmental research.
- Celebrate and incorporate local and traditional environmental knowledge alongside scientific research.
- Support the next generation of Seychellois environmental scientists through networking and professional development opportunities.
SYMPOSIUM STRUCTURE
The symposium will be held over four days and will feature a dynamic programme designed to encourage learning, discussion and collaboration.
Days 1–3 | Eden Bleu Hotel, Eden Island, Mahé
The first three days will focus on the scientific programme and will include:
- Keynote presentations from invited speakers
- Parallel oral presentation sessions
- Special thematic sessions
- Government addresses
- Networking opportunities
Both in-person and online participation will be available during the first three days, allowing national and international participants to engage throughout the event.
Day 4 | Seychelles National Museum of History, Victoria, Mahé
- Poster presentations
- Interactive activities and animations by Dekouver Nou Losean
- Public engagement activities celebrating International Day for Biological Diversity (22 May)
- Opportunities for researchers to engage directly with members of the public
This final day will extend the symposium beyond the scientific community, encouraging dialogue between researchers and society while highlighting the importance of biodiversity conservation and environmental stewardship in Seychelles.

Participants are responsible for arranging and covering the costs of:

- Airport transfers
- Accommodation
- Evening meals

- Visa requirements (where applicable)

The Eden Bleu Hotel offers modern conference facilities, multiple presentation rooms, and excellent accessibility. Following the successful hosting of the 2024 symposium, it has been selected once again as the venue for the Seychelles Environmental Science Symposium 2027.
Seychelles National Museum of History (22nd May 2027)
Victoria, Mahé, Seychelles
The final day of the symposium will move to the Seychelles National Museum of History in Victoria, providing a unique setting that connects scientific research with Seychelles’ cultural heritage. As the country’s principal institution for interpreting and showcasing Seychelles’ history, the museum offers an ideal venue for engaging researchers, students, and the wider public.
