The overarching priority is to build a global presence. Seychelles is a small island developing state, but the reach and aspirations of its university are international. The University operates on an international platform and this must be reflected in all areas of University life. Through its International Collaboration Schemes, UniSey aspires to:

a) build a strong network of partnerships across the world;

b) offer programmes, teaching and learning experiences that meet international standards;

c) create opportunities for staff and students to gain international exposure;

d) create a platform for staff to work alongside internationally known experts;

e) make provision to increase mobility of students and staff.

This entails the consolidation of agreements, with a move towards broader and multidisciplinary engagement. Partnerships include but are not limited to: twining programmes, collaborative research, and training cooperation with one or more institutions. One principal aim is to ensure that the engagement is beneficial to all parties.

Procedures for engagement

International institutions wishing to collaborate with UniSey will be required to complete the UICS Institution Form and provide all relevant documentation as specified on the form.

The form and documents must then be submitted to the Global Engagement Committee for approval. Once approved, a collaborative formal agreement must be generated by the UniSey International Affairs Office in liaison with the international institution.

This includes the introduction of ongoing programmes for inbound and outbound students and staff, from a range of countries and backgrounds, in the field of environment, tourism, blue economy, and business. This scheme supports the creation of opportunities for students to travel abroad during their academic programme and gain academic credit for their involvement in overseas programmes; and the creation of opportunities for staff to travel abroad to gain international exposure.

INBOUND STUDENT PROGRAMME

Students from partner institutions can spend a few weeks to a year studying at the University of Seychelles, in order to experience a different culture while studying and still obtaining credits towards their degree. There are two options:

a) students continue as full time students at their home institution and continue to pay their tuition fees and other fees to their home institution but study modules approved jointly by UniSey and their home institution.
b) students enrol directly with UniSey on specific modules and pay the associated fees while remaining as full-time students at their home institution.

Procedures for engagement

External students who would like to participate in an exchange program must ensure that there is a partnership agreement between the University of Seychelles and the home institution they are enrolled with. All applications should come from the office responsible for student exchange program at the partner institution.

    • Students wishing to come to UniSey must complete the Student Exchange Form which further specifies all other requirements. The form should be submitted at least one month before the proposed start date of the visit.
    • An invitation letter from UniSey will be issued upon approval.
    • Students should contact the International Affairs Office for accommodation options and arrangements.
    • Students are expected to have sufficient funds to support themselves for the duration of their stay.

OUTBOUND STUDENTS

UniSey is in the process of developing a study abroad programme for its students. However, students with the required funding may choose to participate in study abroad programmes at international universities at their own expense.

OUTBOUND STAFF

UniSey encourages its staff to participate in staff exchange programmes. Currently this is being done on an individual basis. UniSey staff wishing to engage in exchange programmes should visit the International Affairs Office to discuss the way forward.

VISITING SCHOLARS

UniSey welcomes scholars from academic institutions around the world to engage with its students and staff for a period of one to twelve months. Engagements can be in the form of seminars, conferences, one-time lectures or consultancy. All activities will be agreed at the start of the visit.

Procedures for engagement

    • Scholars wishing to come to UniSey must complete the UICS Visiting Fellow Form which specifies all requirements.. The form should be submitted at least one month before the proposed start date of the visit.
    • Once requests have been received by UniSey, scholars must give a minimum of two weeks for approval and receipt of an invitation letter.
    • The Global Engagement Committee has the final authority to determine whether the scholar’s proposed activities meet all criteria before issuing an invitation letter.
    • Scholars will be required to have sufficient funding to cover all expenses such as insurance, medical, food, transportation and accommodation. According to Seychelles law international scholars should not be engaged in paid employment during their stay.
    • Depending on the engagement, the University may charge a bench fee to cover expenses.
    • For more information about visa entry requirements please go to www.ics.gov.sc.
    • Scholars should contact the International Affairs Office for accommodation options and arrangements.

This entails the development of a reputation-building strategy for research in targeted areas which will ultimately result in staff and student participation in international research activities and conferences. Any individuals, internally or externally, wishing to engage in research collaboration should contact the International Affairs Office to discuss the way forward.

This includes the development of specific programmes that allow visitors from overseas to spend time learning about various aspects specific to Seychelles (for example, nature, environment, culture). Current programme on offer: Tropical Island Ecosystem.

Additionally, this scheme deals with the creation of space or opportunities for visitors to use Seychelles as a base for research.
