The B.Ed. Early Secondary programme specialisation in Social Sciences is designed to equip participants with knowledge, skills and attitude to become effective and reflective practitioners. In addition, the purpose of the programme is to enhance the quality of education and training for adolescents and adult learners.

The key principles of the B.Ed. Secondary programme specialisation in Social Sciences aim to provide focus and direction relating to:

  • Learners and learning
  • Professional practice in education and training
  • Quality and practice in professional

 

The principles are integral parts of the programme and thus encompass the concept of reflective practice and that of being a reflective practitioner. The programme is designed to enhance practice through insight, understanding and skills development within the context of reflective teaching.


3 – 5 years part time

The programme is offered part time.

The programme is offered in English.

Year 1:

    • Sense of History
    • Foundation in Human Geography
    • WBE 1b
    • Foundation in Physical Geography
    • Social and Cultural History
    • WBE 2a

 

Year 2:

    • History through Novels and Films
    • Enquiring Learning (1)
    • WBE 2b
    • Enquiring Learning (2)
    • African History
    • WBE 3a
    • Empires and Colonies
    • Case studies in the Seychelles Context
    • WBE 3b

 

Year 3:

    • Issues in History or Geography Education
    • Action Research in Education – Methodologies 1
    • Curriculum and Policy in History or Geography
    • Action Research in Education – Methodologies 2
    • Action Research in Social Science Education – Practical
  • The programme will have two major components: theoretical and practical. The former will be achieved through lectures and tutorials. The latter will involve Work-Based Experience (WBE) in relevant educational institution(s).

  • Programme participants will be supported throughout their programme by lecturers and other support staff to become competent and reflective practitioners.

The programme is suitable for participants who have scored a total of not less than 5 points at AS/A Level including a minimum Grade D at A Level in intended subject of specialization.

Or/ with

Diploma or Advanced Diploma in Education and at least 2 years in Teaching with IGCSE grade C, or equivalent, in English and Mathematics.

Or/ with

RPL entry, Certificates entry requirements, recommendation from the employer, and at least 10 years of teaching experience. (Requirements for entry is guided as per RPL SQA policy, Feb 2017)
